Problem-Based Learning

Explanation of the Grading System

(Adapted by Trudy O'Brien from the original by Janet McGrath, Inuktitut instructor, SLALS, 2001, and permitted for acknowledged use)

A letter grade is issued to each student at the end of the course. Throughout the course you will have opportunities to check and see approximately where you are at in your achievement by meeting with me during office hours. I recognize that each student has different reasons for taking the course; some have the goal just to pass the course with the minimum grades for advancement, others want to get as high a mark as they can with a moderate amount of effort, and others want to get a high mark and learn as much as they can. This is your education, and I respect whatever your personal goals for achievement are. Sometimes I have noticed that students have high goals for achievement in a course, but they have made assumptions about what is expected, or put a lot of extra effort into an area, which didn't necessarily give them higher marks.
